Case Study: Louise Goodey Photography

A case study on how we worked with Louise to help her achieve her ambition of making her business flourish and step up to the next level.

“Working with Carlos was really enjoyable and highly rewarding, he took on my brief and achieved everything I was hoping for and then some! Business is booming! Thanks Carlos” - Louise Goodey

Introduction

Louise Goodey is a Photographer who specializes in portrait, wedding and wildlife photography. Her style is traditional but with a twist of quirkiness, her strengths include getting past the hackneyed posing style to uncover the personalities behind her subjects.

After a successful few years of work she came to me looking for a fresh start for her branding and marketing materials. She’d approached a few other designers but wasn’t happy with their approach to her needs and/or cost; but we hit it off straight away and were both eager to get started.

Brief

Initially Louise was looking for branding material (logo, colour pallet, fonts, icons and brand guideline), a new website, and marketing material (flyers, pricing sheets, brochure and Instagram templates). After this we also went on to work together on designing templates for her wedding albums and tutorials for advanced Photoshop use.

Louise had a good idea of what she was after, like her photography she wanted clean and contemporary design but with a quirky twist. Something that wasn’t too crazy but also stood out from the crowded marketplace.

Branding

After a few meetings discussing her work, precedents and what she wanted to achieve we were ready to get going and had some strong ideas to develop. We started with a selection of fonts for her to review, in the end we went with a modern take on a traditional serif font to represent the elegance of her wedding photography, it was a relatively heavy font to help stand out when placed over her photographs. To juxtapose this we selected a very clean, crisp and modern font as the secondary font, the idea was to add an air of contemporary design that was also easy on the eye and enjoyable to read.

Colour-wise we wanted to keep it simply so it wouldn’t distract from her photography, which always needed to take centre stage. We went with a very dark navy blue, almost black, and white; along with a few natural tones as secondary colours, to be used only when needed.

For the logo we wanted to use the fonts we’d agreed on earlier along with an illustration to represent her style. We went through several different ideas all of which she really liked, but in the end we decided to continue evolving an abstract illustration of a camera amongst nature. The design continued to evolve to show different nods to her style.

Website

The main goal of Louise’s website was to promote her work and take bookings, we also wanted, as mentioned earlier, to let the photography take centre stage. So design-wise we used a light touch, encouraging the user to enjoy the photos and be taken on a ride through her portfolio. Louise works in a few different sectors so we used the home page as a portal, to help the user understand quickly the sectors Louise works in and also as a quick and easy navigation system.

Within each sector’s page we used a full screen hero image to add a bit of ‘wow’ along with a nice idiom to help set the scene. Below this we added a description of her work and style and then a selection of images for the user to scroll through and enjoy. On the contact page there is also a general enquiry contact form and a booking form for wedding photography.

Marketing Material

For the marketing material, we took a similar approach to the website, clean and crisp with plenty of white space, and let the photos do the talking.

Louise’s marketing material included (apart from the business card and Instagram templates these all needed to work as digital and printed media):

  • Brochures for each sector
  • Wedding package pricing brochure
  • Flyers
  • Business card
  • Price Lists
  • Magazine Advert
  • Instagram Post and Story Templates

Conclusion

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Louise and even better was watching her business grow and flourish. She says it because of all our branding and website work but we know it’s more to do with her skill as a photographer! Either way, we’re confident the design work we did for her helped her business step up to the next level.

Testimonial

Picking Carlito.Design to help me relaunch my business was one of the best choices I’ve made! Carlos helped me to develop my design brief and then continued to advise and help me through the process, with his friendly and funny character every meeting was a pleasure. The design process was very clear and rewarding, he continually took on my thoughts and was able to reproduce them in his designs so I felt included in the process and am extremely proud of the results. I have recommended Carlito.Design to many friends and fellow photographers, and continue to work with him on a regular basis.”
